ROOT CANALS

Learn About Root Canal Procedures

A root canal becomes necessary when the innermost part of the tooth becomes infected. While it is never good news to hear you need a root canal, the procedure, unlike the ailment, is painless and routine. Kremer Dental Care’s gentle care and the comfort options assure you will leave happy and pain free.

What is a root canal?

At the center of your teeth there are a hollow canals that run from the root of each tooth to just under the surface of the top. These canals run through the center of the roots, similar to the way pencil lead runs through a pencil. These canals can become infected by disease, which can cause constant pain.

Root canal treatment begins opening the tooth’s surface, and then gently cleaning the area out to remove any decayed tissue or bacteria. A dental filling will then be applied to restore the root area. A crown can also be an alternative to fillings.

The doctors at Kremer Dental Care in Chico can help with root canal treatments. In most cases, the tooth exam and procedure can be completed in a single dental appointment, but can take two appointments depending on the severity of the infection.

Root Canal Procedure

The procedure of root canal treatment is not so complicated, but it really depends on the conditions of your teeth. You might need two appointments to complete root canal therapy.

  • Root Canal treatment initially carried out through several diagnostic tests and preparation.
  • Opening in the crown through the enamel plus dentin tissues of the teeth using a dental drill .
  • Removal of pulp tissue.
  • Filling the canal using a standard material Gutta-Percha.

Fun Trivia

In 1838, the root canal treatment appliance was invented from a watch-spring, which was used to reach the pulp inside the root of the teeth. This appliance was manually managed by endodontists during the treatment. However, it was specifically used to open the route to the tooth canal to clean the root canal.

There are several filling materials used in root canal treatments including Gutta-Percha, which was first invented in 1847.

Frequently Asked Questions About Root Canals

  • What are some signs that I might need a root canal, even before seeing a dentist?
Persistent tooth pain, extreme sensitivity to heat or cold, darkening of the tooth, or a small bump on your gum can all be warning signs. These symptoms suggest infection or nerve damage, and early treatment with a root canal can help save the tooth.
  • Is a root canal better than extracting the tooth?
In most cases, yes. A root canal allows you to preserve your natural tooth, which helps maintain your bite alignment and jawbone health. Tooth extraction may seem quicker, but it often leads to added dental work like implants or bridges to fill the gap.
  • How long does a root canal take from start to finish?
Most root canal procedures can be completed in one to two visits, depending on the complexity of the infection and the tooth being treated. Molars typically require more time than front teeth due to their additional canals and deeper roots.
  • Will I feel pain during or after the procedure?
Modern root canals are virtually painless, thanks to advanced anesthesia and techniques. In fact, most patients say it feels similar to getting a regular filling. Some tenderness afterward is normal, but it's usually manageable with over-the-counter pain relief.
  • Can a root canal fail or need to be redone?
Yes, though it's rare. A root canal may need retreatment if the tooth gets re-infected, which can happen due to complex anatomy, delayed crown placement, or new decay. Regular checkups and good oral hygiene reduce this risk significantly.
  • What should I avoid doing after a root canal?
Until the permanent crown or filling is placed, avoid chewing on the treated tooth to prevent damage. Stick to soft foods for a few days, and avoid extremely hot or cold items if your tooth is still sensitive. Brush and floss gently around the area as it heals.
  • Are there alternatives to root canals?
The only true alternative to a root canal is tooth extraction, followed by a dental implant, bridge, or partial denture. While these options can be effective, they’re often more costly and time-intensive than simply preserving your natural tooth.

  • My confidence level is off the charts! Looking back on my teeth before veneers... WOW! Major, major difference!

In the process between the temporary and the porcelains, there were quite a few visits to the dentist office to make sure the real things were going to fit just right and feel natural. In the mean time, when my teeth weren't feeling accurate, Dr. Kremer and the team didn't waste any time fitting me into their schedule to figure out exactly what the problem was.

The clinic itself is beautifully designed—cozy and comfortable, it doesn’t feel like a typical dental office at all, which helped ease my nerves. The staff member who took my dental photos was very kind and attentive, and the dentist was exceptional. Knowledgeable, approachable, and patient in answering all my questions, they made sure I understood everything about my dental care. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I highly recommend this clinic.
